National Running Day: 10 Ways to Celebrate

Team Sneakers4Good

National Running day is here, and this is your chance to join the global day for running. As a result of the day, the idea is to get people active. On June 5th, you’re going to have your chance to move. But, it doesn’t matter what you do. You can run up and down the stairs of your building, or if you’re a runner, you can celebrate the day by going for a long jog. Still, if walking is more your speed, that’s okay too. Ask your friends to join you for a walk around the neighborhood or take your dog out for a longer walk than usual.

Today, we’re going to share with you a few of our brilliant ideas that we’ve brainstormed with our team to get you started. And, there are no excuses. If you’ve been thinking of starting a running program or anything that requires physical activity, or you want to increase your movement, this is your chance. So, here are 10 of our awesome ideas to get your moving!

1) Take the National Running Day Pledge

If you haven’t done it already, take the pledge on the Global Running Day site. When you do that, you’re holding yourself accountable. You also have the chance to join a team or do something on your own. And, if you’d like, you have the option to record how many miles you plan to run and why. So, that’s a great place to start!

2) Recruit a Buddy for the Day

Doing something is always easier with a friend. So, recruit a friend to join you on National Running Day. As an idea, maybe you and a friend can do what two of our teammates have done. They’ve joined together to do a marathon, and they don’t even live in the same cities. All you have to do is get someone near or far to partner with you to start doing something beginning on the Global Running Day.

3) Sign-up for a Marathon

You can decide on Global Running Day to sign-up for a marathon, even if the marathon is next year. As you know, you’ll have to train to be able to run a marathon anyway. So, why not challenge yourself to run a marathon in a great city that, perhaps, you’ve always wanted to visit? That way, you can make your marathon run a part of a more extended vacation. Or, if you’re already a marathoner, how about trying for the Ironman World Championship?

4) Give Up Your Old Kicks for a Good Cause

If you’re already a runner, then you know that you have to change your sneakers and running shoes every 300 to 500 miles. But, you don’t want those old kicks of yours to go into the trash. Do something right for the environment and also for people in developing countries on Global Running Day. All you have to do is send your old sneakers to Head2Toe Recycling. And, while you’re at it, send all of your old stuff and help a worthy cause.

5) Sign-up for a Mud Run on Global Running Day

Want to have a lot of fun going through an obstacle course while you make new friends and teammates? Consider signing up for a mud run where you’re going to get muddy, but you’ll have a blast. There are a bunch of great groups that sponsor mud runs, including Tough Mudder. Therefore, after your run or walk around the neighborhood on National Running Day, sign up for one of many mud runs.

6) Take Out Fido and Support Animal Welfare

Here’s another awesome idea that you can do on National Running Day––walk your dog and raise money for a good cause! In other words, did you know every time you walk the dog, you can raise funds for your favorite animal welfare group? All you have to do is to download the WoofTrax app, and every step you take walking the dog can help animals in need.

7) Go Virtual for National Running Day

Hey, we get it. On June 5th you might be busy, or it might be pouring rain outside. But, there’s no need to worry. You can still get involved while you do sit-ups in your house or run up and down your stairs. Join the New York Road Runner’s Virtual Global Running Day 1M race. It’s is truly global, and everyone can participate between June 1st and June 9th.

8) Go Shopping and Get Your Gear

After you’ve done your run or exercise program on National Running Day, go shopping. Get yourself some new kicks, a yoga mat, or new and clothing for exercise. When you do this, you’re going to feel better because you’re treating yourself and getting the equipment you need. Don’t forget that anything old, you can give to Head2Toe Recycling, so it doesn’t end up in the trash.

9) Celebrate Your Running Accomplishments on Social Media

Social media lends itself for National Running Day. Share your pictures, what you do for social good and any posts across your Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts. So, remember to use the following hashtags: #nationalrunningday and #globalrunningday. Share the love with others and get involved in the global conversation for this special day on the calendar.

10) Have a Party for Global Running Day

Finally, after you’ve walked, run, or signed up for something big, like a marathon, have a party or go out for a few beers and cocktails. Ask your friends and colleagues to join you at your place or a local bar. In closing, the best way to celebrate National Running Day is in the company of people you enjoy!
